Law is too wishy-washy and vague in that area and prosecutors throw unindictable and unpredictable wobbler charges at anything that moves in court. Case law is specified in the statute, not by cases in court. So you can steal anything you want in California if you can get a lawyer to argue five minutes in court about all the technicalities.
