A "pro" or "professional" would typically be an independent contractor or consultant. Employees and wage earners are not typically considered professionals.
People with "professional" experience are very often quickly overlooked for hourly or salaried positions.
If you're overqualified to be working for a “boss,” then you really need to be your own boss. The company may be able to afford your professional services on an occasional basis, but they simply can't afford to keep you on full time at professional rates.
