Louisiana warns against flesh-eating bacteria after five deaths

State officials said nine people have been infected with Vibrio vulnificus this year and five of them have died.

Louisiana health officials are urging beachgoers and residents to take precautions amid a deadly outbreak from the flesh-eating bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. So far this year, nine cases have been reported among Louisiana residents, with five deaths, according to an Aug. 6 update from the Louisiana Department of Health. All nine cases were associated with wounds exposed to seawater contaminated with the Vibrio bacteria, and all patients had underlying health conditions.

So there are parochial health officials in Louisiana with very strong local opinions, that pork and shellfish are not kosher, or whatever.

I wouldn't appreciate being accosted or “urged” in a swimsuit by pompous politicians or their enforcers at the beach, and I'm rolling my eyes at Jewish wives' tales of flesh-eating bacteria in shellfish.

The “underlying health conditions” cited — including the parochial assumptions of sexual promiscuity in a swimsuit at the beach — are even more suspect, as to cause of death, if there are any worthwhile vital statistics to be had in Louisiana's parishes.

Go right ahead and preach a sermon on the general morality of sunbathing or swimming mostly nude if you will or care to, but with a public health district at law, there is no such mercy and no such grace, and certainly no salvation by such and such works of the law with “public health” set forth as a matter to be enforced in court and not, as it should be, a matter of the healing of nations.

No true “public health” is of any sort of district or parish in the Bible: only that prescribed for the healing of the nations.
