The Marine was accused of beating a Russian cop while several Russian cops were accused of beating him in prison
The fact that Gilman apparently fell seriously ill before he was incarcerated indicated that his medical issues are and were much more serious than any Dostoevsky issues of crime and punishment he faced or would have faced. That he is still alive and apparently well enough to eat a cheeseburger — I can't offer any opinions about the time gap in his résumé or the time he was supposedly in prison in Russia or what he was or would have been doing there in prison or at a labor camp or whatnot.
Former Marine Robert Gilman released from Russian prison in ‘dire’ condition
(NewsNation) — Former Marine Robert Gilman, 32, has been released after being held in Russia since 2022, but his family says he’s in “dire” condition and being taken directly to an American hospital.

Sen. Markey celebrated Gilman's release in a post on X while also describing Gilman's debilitating condition. ¶"Approximately 50 days ago, Robert was diagnosed with a dissociative stupor – a condition where he is non-responsive and unable to interact or eat. He was essentially catatonic and also suffered a severe case of pneumonia. We don't yet know the full details of his current condition or the long-term impact on his recovery. I'm grateful that Robert is now on his way back to the United States to receive the life-saving care that he desperately needs," Markey wrote.
Markey's prognosis of Gilman sounds much more upbeat than that of the doctors, assuming the former Marine did recover to some degree and was able to make the flight home.
America's hospitals in their present state of moral decay, offering nothing more than mental health, abortion services and recreational access to narcotics as they do, of course, are not really much more to brag about than Russian prisons.
