General government debt in Germany increased by €144 billion in 2025 to €2.84 trillion. Central government debt, including its off-budget entities, grew by €107 billion.

After all, Germany is only €2.8 trillion in debt. However unlike the national debt of the United States, it is a “hard money” debt owed in a currency over which Germany no longer exercises absolute sovereignty.
