New York’s DMV point system helps identify and punish repeat offenders.

According to the New York DMV point system, the Government may take away a driver’s license when they accumulate 11 points within a 24-month period. Although on its official website, it is clarified that this is not the only way to lose the license. It is important to clarify that the total number of points is calculated based on the date of the violation and not the date of the conviction. Likewise, the insurance company could use them to raise premiums. If the driver receives 6 or more points in 18 months, they must pay a driver responsibility assessment fee.
