I do believe a polite “Howdy-do?” with a firm handshake is enough due diligence and concern over another's well-being without being intrusive or overbearing.
Anything other than, “I’m your sheriff and I'm just here for a friendly visit because I'm running for re-election and I'd like your vote!”
If someone really is on welfare benefits, it would appear they are entitled to what little property and money they have without police interference.
Otherwise, cops who can't explain deaths would be better off in court if they weren't brothers' keepers.
