Who's personally responsible?

Trump wants $230 million from DOJ for investigating him: NYT
President Donald Trump was previously criminally charged in connection with efforts to reverse his 2020 election loss and retaining classified documents.

Of course Donald Trump should be compensated for any wrongdoing committed against him by rogue officials, but the D.O.J. itself, or by any other account, the general fund of the U.S. Treasury, should be held harmless.

The former officials should be disgorged of their ill-gotten gains and made to pay Trump personally for the damages they caused him by abusing their offices to pursue personally or politically motivated investigations and character assassination campaigns against him. They have the money. They're worthy of it.

The rest of us who did no harm to Trump personally should not be taxed or obligated to compensate him for that purpose. If the D.O.J. has an internal process for reviewing and administering such claims, they need to make good on legitimate claims and recoup the damages from the liable parties without depleting the general budget.
