Canadian man arrested by international authorities, charged with administrating KimWolf DDoS botnet

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A criminal complaint was unsealed in the District of Alaska today charging a Canadian man with operating the KimWolf Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Internet of Things (IoT) botnet. The U.S. complaint was unsealed following the defendant’s arrest in Canada by Canadian authorities.

A man who was not physically present in the aforementioned District of Alaska at the time of the alleged crime, and likely never set foot on Alaska soil.

According to court documents, on April 10, 2026, U.S. authorities criminally charged Jacob Butler, aka “Dort,” 23, of Ottawa, Canada, with offenses related to the development and operation of the KimWolf botnet. KimWolf was a DDoS-for-hire service which infected over a million devices worldwide, including devices located in Alaska.

That sounds quite fantastic. What's a DDoS-for-hire service? And why would I want to pay for it? What exactly is the monthly or annual charge for the alleged KimWolf Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Internet of Things (IoT) botnet service? Did any Alaska clients actually pay for and use the alleged denial-of-service service?

Some of these claims are getting too specious and technical for court. If that’s how Internet of Things devices work, that’s because that’s how they're intended to work. The manufacturers and vendors of the said DDoS/IoT devices are, after all, professionals, and obviously, however they make their money, that's how they make their money.

I'd much rather that the FBI focus on actual crimes such as murder-for-hire rather than specious computer games. If there's money involved, then I would need to know how exactly any criminal charges followed the money trail.

The complaint remained sealed pending Butler’s arrest.

It’s an open warrant or get off the property already. If a man is wanted, he’s wanted. The people will help you if the people want him in court for crimes he’s allegedly committed. If not, well, he’d better be free to go. Do you want the opinions of a randomly selected jury?

Following coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), Butler was taken into custody yesterday in Ottawa, Canada, pursuant to an extradition warrant. …

Are these KimWolf things available on the shelf at Best Buy in Anchorage? Would I be arrested if I purchased and used a KimWolf or other brand of DDoS/IoT device?
