Finnish «naida» is a strong verb that does imply an actual consummation of the said marriage whereas «mennä naimisiin» is used in more “polite” but less formal speech. This latter phrase, like “going out” or “going steady” or “going as a married couple” is more indicative of living together in fornication without lawful marriage or else executing unconsummated and presumably null or void “marriages of convenience” or making false promises or vows not even intended to be kept.

The Finns were called briefly into military service in WWII to fight off Stalinist invaders, but as soon as they caught wind of the scent of burning human flesh from the German concentration camps, they promptly went home, deciding that they could slaughter and roast their own hogs without any further assistance from the Germans. Obviously those Finns were at that time as honorable as they could possibly be under the circumstances.

However they did not continue in that honor. Finland unfortunately, if not officially, fell behind the Iron Curtain in the Cold War, and many if not most of those communist policies and practices of government are still in place in that country (as well as Ukraine for another example) to this day.
