Shoddy building practices rebuked in the Bible
Ancient Jewish building codes
People were at law in business, taking as much advantage as possible for themselves, and putting the other party at as much disadvantage as they could under the terms of every contract and every dealing with a customer.
[Haggai 1:3–6] Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
Ancient construction workers, many of them Babylonians or heathens working for wages, lived in cieled houses, and yet were unwilling or unable to complete the task of building a house with a ceiling and a roof, which they were being paid rather handsomely to do.
[Ezekiel 13:10–16] Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered morter: Say unto them which daub it with untempered morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend it. Lo, when the wall is fallen, shall it not be said unto you, Where is the daubing wherewith ye have daubed it?Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it. So will I break down the wall that ye have daubed with untempered morter, and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. Thus will I accomplish my wrath upon the wall, and upon them that have daubed it with untempered morter, and will say unto you, The wall is no more, neither they that daubed it; To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD.
So these people greeted one another with God's peace, but they installed Sheetrock on the walls, and taped it and mudded it and applied orange peel texture when the building was not roofed yet, and then they filed materialmen's and mechanics' liens in a court of law for the payment of their wages and supply bills for the improvements to the real property they had allegedly made by installing gypsum wallboard with untempered plaster to the interior walls of an unroofed building.
