Poor medical care
And strange offbeat medical diagnoses.

Fox's Book of Martyrs tells us about a Christian lady who stabbed herself in the heart and died rather than submitting to rape.
There are men who fraternize or convene with strange rites characterized by an overwhelming general lust or desire — secretly acknowledged among themselves — to prevaricate and cause a girl or young woman to suffer and die by unnatural means.
I had been forced to flee certain men like that for my very life, and I hid myself some nights in the tenth floor of a bank building, and in the middle of the night I awoke in my hiding place to the muffled voices of several men who were bank officials interrogating and torturing a young woman to death. I remained silent in dead fright as I heard the sound of her last breath expiring.
I did not say or do anything, since those were powerful and wealthy men of the Establishment, and moreover I was very careful, traveling away from that place, (once again in fear of my life,) not to carry any cash or valuables, not to receive or accept any sums of money out of the ordinary, not to accept any luxury or excessive hospitality, and not to leave with more money or valuables than that with which I arrived, although, it is true, money was offered conspicuously to me in a purple bag in an obvious attempt to entrap me on false criminal charges. Instead I gave the money to the bus driver. The bus driver immediately pulled over, ran into the nearest casino and got arrested with the marked bills. It was about 18 hours among strange and uncomfortably silent company before another driver was dispatched.
