There is a broad category of females who do illegal street drugs and have too many body piercings, noserings and tattoos, cut and dyed hair etc., most often promoted by businesses that hire such females in low wage customer service positions.
Correlation is not necessarily causation.
So it is hard to say. Most probably she was in a relationship with some drug dealer who thought it looked cute on her: under the influence of drugs, she was easily convinced to have it done, and only regretted it after breaking up with her drug dealer and finding a different source to supply her drug habit.
