Every famous or valuable painting or sculpture or similar piece of art is famous because the artist and the history of ownership of it is well known.
It's not really possible to enjoy or appreciate the artwork in hiding or in fear of being caught or tracked down by the rightful owners of the work.
There have also been incidents of vandalism of valuable artworks on display at museums or galleries.
Thieves are really dumb if they are going to steal the artwork, show it off or exhibit it somewhere and not get caught.
