A Walnut Creek, CA, rental has been taken off the market after it received serious backlash for demanding an extra $200 monthly fee from any renter who works from home. ¶The Bay Area rental immediately baffled renters throughout the area when they noticed the unusual fee in addition to the $3,250 monthly rent. ¶“That’s crazy,” area renter Samara Wondimu told local ABC affiliate KGO-TV. ¶Another renter, Cody Hall, called the additional fee “ridiculous,” while Christopher Williams, who works remotely in Chicago, said that he had “never heard of that.”
The leasing office may want to know you have a steady income to pay the rent but the rental unit managers and maintenance men should not ever be in direct communication with your employer or have knowledge of your work schedule or times when they might search your place for contraband and valuables when you are presumably away at work.
