The United States is set to launch a new phase of Venezuela-related operations in the coming days, according to a report from Reuters Saturday evening. Two U.S. officials told Reuters that “covert operations” would likely be the first part of the next phase against Venezuela and President Nicolas Maduro’s government, and overthrowing Maduro is being considered as an option. The Trump administration has been conducting strikes and ramping up pressure on the government in recent months in an effort to combat what it describes as “narco-terrorism” being led by Maduro.

Military strikes against cartel facilities in Mexico and Colombia are also contemplated in conjunction with the covert operations being conducted in Venezuela. At least 12,000 U.S. Marines have arrived in the area along with a flotilla of warships and an aircraft carrier with several fighter jets and are preparing and practicing for littoral combat and land invasion as well as aerial bombings if necessary.
